In the last few years, there has been a large decline in the overall value of the global stock markets.  It is for this reason that people have been wary of investing or opening new stock accounts.  They fear that jumping into the stock market will cause a decline in their own personal financial stability.  But if you learn stock market basics well enough, you will realize that as a beginning investor, it is all about taking well-calculated and diversified risks.

Not Complex

Many people believe that understanding stock market basics is very confusing and complex.  While it is true that the process is a bit overwhelming compared to learning basic mathematical equations and theories, it is possible to quickly understand how the stock market works if you really take time to study it carefully.

Origins of Trading

The first thing that you have to know when learning stock market basics is its historical origins.  Did you know that people have been investing in the stock market for more than 200 years?  That is right, trading is something that our ancestors have been practicing on a daily basis for centuries.

Basic Terms

Now let us understand the terminology of the stock market.  The term “stock market” simply refers to the place or location where people trade stocks and bonds.  Trading implies either buying or selling these stocks and bonds.

What are stocks exactly?  They are the units of ownership that a corporation or an establishment owns.  In order to finance corporate growth or to improve their liquidity, these corporations sell these stocks to potential investors.  When investors do deposit money to the corporations in exchange for these stocks, the cash investment in the company is dubbed as equity capital.

Equity Capital

If you want to understand Indian stock market basics for example, simply look at what most Indian companies, conglomerates and institutions do:  they sell their stocks in order to acquire equity capital.  The equity capital is then used to fund the corporation’s expansion projects and other similar activities.

Earning from Shares

When learning the basics about stock market investments, one of the most important questions is how exactly does one earn money from buying stocks?  Well, it is as simple as this:  if the corporation earns profits, you earn profits, too.  If the overall value of the corporation in the eyes of the market increases, then share price values increase, and your stock shares are more valuable.  This is because buying equity capital means that you own shares in that corporation.  Therefore, if the corporation succeeds, you succeed.  Therefore, two ways you can earn money is through return of your investment in the form of dividends and share value appreciation.  The risk of course is that if the corporation goes bankrupt, you lose all the money you invested.  So in short, invest wisely.

There are also tax advantages to owning shares.  In the U.S., as in most countries, income earned from selling shares held at least one year are taxed at a much more favorable tax rate than other income.  These are called capital gains, and taxes paid on this income can be as little as 10% compared to as much as 50% taxes for taxpayers in higher income brackets.
