The high demand for nurses has spawned new and unconventional methods of teaching accredited programs. A couple of decades ago, it was difficult to imagine nursing students taking courses outside the traditional nursing school setting. But today, technology has made it possible to bring education to wherever students choose to learn from and nursing online schools and programs are fast gaining ground as alternatives to traditional nursing schools. But is studying nursing online at par or better than doing so in a classroom? Let’s find out.
Online Nursing Program: What it offers students
The Internet is called the information super highway and for good reason. 
Knowledge is available in just a click and this is what online nursing schools are cashing in on. Because the expenses of traveling to a campus location is reduced drastically, the cost of earning a nursing degree actually goes down for most nursing students. Other costs for on-campus school facilities and services also diminishes and reduces student costs. However, some schools do charge an extra fee for online courses in addition to regular tuition.
Furthermore, those who are working won’t have as many difficulties adjusting their schedules to meet the course requirements because their computers at home are now their classrooms.
Traditional Nursing Schools vs. Online Nursing Programs
For traditionalists, nursing, or any course for that matter such as plumbing courses, is best taught by professionals in a classroom. They believe that a nursing training school with a physical location and classrooms is the only place conducive to learning such a significant vocation. While they are not against using modern technology, they warn that an over-reliance on technology for education is denying students the ability to think on their own and to think constructively. This is the same argument used by educators to dissuade the use of calculators in the classroom – the students learn best if they have to actually complete the calculations themselves. They argue that medical courses, like nursing, require hands-on training, which is quite difficult to do online. Even if it can be done, there will be no professional on site to offer assistance if the student run into trouble. But at the same time, they do admit that having some component of online education as part of accredited nursing programs is beneficial, especially since today’s young student is quite adept at computer technology. Most nursing schools incorporate both online and on-site education into their nursing programs. Many courses can be taken online, but there is usually always a clinical trials component of getting and associates or registered nursing degree that must be satisfied with hands-on training and experience.
The end justifies the means, as some of the wise quotes and saying say, and learning to become a nurse is not an easy task, nor should it be made extremely difficult. The demand for nurses is at an all-time high and enterprising individuals are just answering the call by providing online nursing degree programs, online nursing masters program, and online graduate nursing programs to interested individuals willing to try a novel approach to education. But the most important thing to note here, is traditional or modern, each method must pass accreditation standards for students to receive certification. Until universities step up to build more traditional nursing schools to meet the growing demand for nurses in an era of an aging population, there is no option but to provide more training online.
